Features Comparison: Tuft and Needle Vs Puffy Mattress

Despite these two brands offering a wide range of mattresses, our focus will be on the T&N mattress and Puffy mattress. Both of these beds come with all-foam construction and have a medium-firm feel. However, they are constructed differently, and that’s why we want to compare them and help you find the best bed for your needs.

Construction

Before you purchase a new mattress, it’s worth finding out how the mattress is constructed. This will help you pick a bed that will have a feeling that you like. Also, you can determine whether the mattress will sleep cool and last longer or not.

Tuft & Needle

As stated above, Tuft & Needle comes with three different types of mattresses; T&N mattress, T&N Mint, and T&N Hybrid mattresses. Before we look at the Tuft and Needle Mattress, it’s worth knowing what the other T&N beds are made of.

The Tuft & Needle Mint comes with almost the same features as the Tuft & Needle Original mattress. On top of the bed is a cover made up of a blend of polyester and polyamide. This cover is soft to touch and breathable. Next is a 3-inch polyfoam comfort layer. Unlike the T&N Original mattress, this bed comes with an additional 2-inch gel-infused polyfoam layer in the transitional zone. Finally, it has a 7-inch high-density polyfoam in the support core.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress is also 12-inches, just like the T&N Mint mattress. However, this bed is wildly different from the T&N Original and Mint mattresses. It has three layers; 2-inches of graphite and gel-infused memory foam, 1-inch of springy micro-coils, and 1-inch adaptive poly foam. In addition, this mattress comes with 6-inches of pocketed steel coils and 1-inch of high-density polyfoam in the support core, unlike the other beds.

Our primary focus is on the Tuft & Needle Original mattress. This bed measures 10-inches, which is the industry average. Like the T&N Mint mattress, this bed also comes with a soft and breathable cover constructed from a mix of polyester and polyamide. Beneath this cover is a 3-inch layer of low-density polyfoam, followed by a layer that features gel and graphite. At the same time, the support core comes with a layer of high-density polyfoam.

Puffy

Unlike T&N that offers three different types of mattresses, Puffy offers five different types of beds. The Puffy mattress, Puffy Lux, Puffy Royal, Puffy Lux Hybrid, and Puffy Royal Hybrid. The Puffy mattress is of the same height as the T&N Original mattress, which is 10-inches in height. However, the Puffy mattress comes with a gel memory foam in its comfort layer, while the T&N Original bed features adaptive foam.

On top of the Puffy mattress is a 100% polyester cover. This cover is not only stain-resistant but as well as washable. Below the cover is 2-inches of low-density gel-infused memory foam. It is followed by a 2-inch layer of temperature-resistant polyfoam, making this mattress somewhat responsive. The last layer is the support or base layer made up of 6-inches of high-density polyfoam layer.

Aside from the Puffy mattress, this brand also offers the Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal all-foam mattresses. But unlike the Puffy mattress, these two beds come with slightly thicker profiles of 12-inches and 14-inches, respectively. This is because they have thicker comfort and support zones than the Puffy bed.

The Puffy Lux is more supportive than the Puffy mattress. Thanks to its dedicated transitional layer and thicker support core. As a result, its edge is more supportive than the Puffy mattress. On the contrary, the Puffy Royal is the most comfortable Puffy bed. Additionally, it’s the most expensive all-foam Puffy bed. With a 5-5-inch comfort zone and a temperature-resistant polyfoam, this bed is very comfortable. Also, it’s bouncy and regulates temperature better than the other two Puffy beds.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal Hybrid come with the same features as their all-foam counterpart. However, they have coils in their support core instead of a high-density polyfoam layer. As a result, these beds are more breathable and bounce better than Puffy’s all-foam mattresses.

Durability

The durability of a mattress is usually determined by the materials that the bed is made of. Both of these mattresses are well made to last long. Since the beds are made of all-foam layers, expect them to last between 6 and 7. However, since the Puffy mattress is constructed using less dense foams, this mattress may have a shorter lifespan than the Tuft and Needle mattress.

Firmness

The level of firmness of a mattress determines whether the sleeper sleeps comfortably or not. The Tuft and Needle mattress are slightly firm than the Puffy mattress. On the firmness scale of 10, T&N has a rating of 6.5, while the Puffy mattress has a rating of 5. This means that the Puffy mattress is more suited for lightweight sleepers, while the T&N is best for the back, stomach, and average-weight sleepers.

Motion isolation

Sharing a bed with a partner who changes a lot in bed can be pretty challenging. If the bed doesn’t isolate motion well, it may end up distracting your sleep. That’s what happens with most hybrid mattresses. Since Puffy and T&N Original mattresses are made up of memory foam, they limit motion transfer.

However, Puffy is the best as it comes with classic memory foam that does an excellent job of absorbing motion. On the other hand, T&N Original mattress is also good at isolating motion, but the adaptive foam makes it less effective than memory foam.

Edge support

Edge support is vital if you usually sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress. Memory foam polyfoam and even adaptive foam are known to offer less support around the perimeter. But in this case, the adaptive foam that the T&N mattress comes with provides more support than the Puffy mattress.

However, if you need a very supportive mattress around the perimeter, both Tuft and Needle and Puffy have some exceptional options. The T&N Hybrid mattress and Puffy Lux Hybrid, and Puffy Royal Hybrid have a strong edge because of the springy coils in their support core.

Ease of movement

Some beds can be very uncomfortable as they may make you feel stuck in bed. That’s what most memory foam mattresses do. They hug you closely enough, making you feel like you’re stuck in bed. And since the Puffy mattress is made up of memory foam, it will hug you closely, making moving in and out of bed to be quite challenging.

That’s not the same case with the Tuft and Needle Original mattress. This mattress comes with adaptive foam that makes sleepers feel as if they’re sleeping “on” the mattress than “in” the mattress. Besides, the adaptive foam is more responsive than memory foam, helping the sleeper get out of bed quickly.

Temperature control

Memory foam mattresses usually trap heat, causing some people to sleep hot. However, some beds feature breathable memory foam, such as gel-infused memory foam, and sleep slightly cooler than other beds. For example, even though Puffy mattress comes with a gel-infused memory foam, T&N Original mattress still sleeps cooler than Puffy.

The main reason why hot sleepers may dislike Puffy is because of the 4-inches of memory foam that this mattress comes with. This layer traps a lot of heat, while the adaptive foam that the T&N Original bed comes with is more breathable, allowing hot sleepers to sleep cooler.

Pressure relief

If you sleep on a mattress and wake up feeling pain ad soreness in some parts of your body, then you need a bed that relieves pressure well. Most all-foam mattresses are good at alleviating pressure. And since these two beds are made of all-foam layers, they will alleviate pressure and allow the sleeper to sleep comfortably.

Even though both beds are good at relieving pressure, the Puffy mattress relieves pressure best for lightweight individuals, while Puffy relieves pressure best for average-weight and back sleepers.

Sex

Most partners prefer a mattress that is responsive and bouncy. Such a bed is great because partners won’t feel stuck as they have fun. However, memory foam beds do not offer such a feature. That’s why both the T&N mattress and Puffy are not suitable for sex. Of course, unless you want a virtually silent bed.

The best beds for sex are the T&N Hybrid mattress, Puffy Lux Hybrid, and Puffy Royal Hybrid. All of these beds are responsive and bouncy. They also make the sleeper feel as if they’re sleeping on top of the bed; thus, they won’t feel stuck.

Off-gassing

It is okay for a bed-in-a-box mattress to off-gas. So, you should expect both of these mattresses to produce some gas when unboxed. However, both mattresses are shipped while compressed, and you may have to give them a few days for them to off-gas before sleeping on the bed.

Trial period

Most direct-to-consumer mattresses come with a free trial period. The period usually lasts from 30 days to several months and up to a year. In addition, T&N and Puffy come with trial periods of their own. The T&N free trial period lasts for up to 100-nights, while the Puffy free trial period lasts 101-nights.

Nonetheless, Puffy has a mandatory 14-day break-in period, while T&N doesn’t have a mandatory break-in period. So, T&N seems to have the better trial period as it doesn’t require customers to break in before returning the mattress.

Shipping

Tuft and Needle provide free shipping for customers in the contiguous US states, while those in Hawaii and Alaska will have to give a small fee for their mattresses to be shipped. Note that T&N does not ship to Canada. On the contrary, Puffy ships its beds for free to contiguous US states and Canada, while customers in Hawaii and Alaska are also charged a fee for their beds to be shipped.

White glove delivery and old mattress removal

Tuft and Needle offer white-glove delivery and old mattress removal for a fee. However, these services are only limited to customers in the contiguous US states. On the other hand, Puffy mattress does not offer such services at the moment.

Pricing

In terms of pricing, the Puffy mattress is somewhat more expensive than the Tuft & Needle mattress. However, both of these beds are affordable and last long. Besides, these two brands offer all bed sizes; Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Warranty

If you’re worried about mattresses coming with defects or damage, you don’t have to be. T&N and Puffy mattresses both cover their products. In addition, T&N offers shoppers a 10-year non-prorated warranty, while Puffy provides a lifetime, non-prorated warranty. So, you will be covered for this period and as long as you don’t violate their warranties.
